Physician Flourishing
Our Mission
The Sutton Center for Physician Flourishing is dedicated to advancing physician well-being through evidence-based research, innovative assessment, leadership development, mentorship, and organizational partnerships. We believe physician flourishing is essential to delivering exceptional patient care and creating sustainable healthcare systems.
Our Vision
A healthcare system where every physician has the opportunity to flourish personally, professionally, and organizationally throughout their career.
Why Physician Flourishing Matters
Physician flourishing is essential to safe, high-quality, and compassionate healthcare. Research demonstrates that physician well-being is associated with better patient experiences, stronger professionalism, and healthier healthcare organizations, while burnout is associated with increased medical errors, lower patient satisfaction, reduced workforce retention, and substantial organizational costs (National Academy of Medicine, 2019; Panagioti et al., 2018; Shanafelt et al., 2017; West et al., 2018).
Despite tremendous advances in treating disease, the well-being of the physicians providing that care has often received less attention. Flourishing extends beyond the prevention of burnout to encompass purpose, meaningful work, positive relationships, engagement, accomplishment, and opportunities for professional growth. It reflects not simply the absence of distress, but the presence of conditions that enable physicians to thrive throughout their careers (Keyes, 2002; Seligman, 2011).
Physician flourishing is not solely an individual responsibility; it is shaped by the environments in which physicians learn and practice. The National Academy of Medicine (2019) emphasizes the need for organizational and structural solutions to clinician distress, highlighting the importance of leadership, workplace culture, and healthcare systems that support well-being.
The Sutton Center for Physician Flourishing takes a systems-based approach to advancing physician well-being through research, assessment, mentorship, leadership development, and organizational partnerships. By identifying and strengthening the individual, relational, and organizational factors that foster flourishing across medical education and practice, the Center aims to help create healthcare environments in which physicians, learners, and patients can thrive.
Our Philosophy
Physician Flourishing Is More Than the Absence of Burnout
The conversation surrounding physician well-being has changed dramatically over the past decade. Growing evidence has demonstrated that physician burnout is associated with poorer patient outcomes, increased medical errors, workforce instability, and reduced professional satisfaction (National Academy of Medicine [NAM], 2019; Panagioti et al., 2018). These findings have appropriately drawn attention to the importance of supporting physicians throughout their careers.
Yet we believe the conversation should not end with preventing burnout.
At the Sutton Center for Physician Flourishing, we believe the ultimate goal is not merely to reduce distress, but to create the conditions in which physicians can flourish. Flourishing represents a positive state characterized by purpose, meaningful work, healthy relationships, continuous growth, professional fulfillment, and organizational environments that enable individuals to thrive (Keyes, 2002; Seligman, 2011).
Our work asks a different question.
Instead of asking, “How do we prevent physicians from burning out?” we ask, “What enables physicians to flourish?”
Flourishing Is a Systems Outcome
Physician flourishing cannot be understood solely as an individual characteristic.
While personal resilience, coping skills, and self-care are valuable, they represent only part of the picture. Physicians practice within teams, organizations, communities, and healthcare systems that shape their daily experiences. Leadership, organizational culture, mentorship, workload, psychological safety, reimbursement structures, and opportunities for professional growth all influence whether physicians are able to thrive.
Consistent with the National Academy of Medicine’s systems approach to clinician well-being (NAM, 2019), we believe physician flourishing emerges through the interaction of multiple levels of influence rather than through individual effort alone.
The Sutton Institute Model of Physician Flourishing
The Sutton Center approaches physician flourishing through four interconnected domains.
Individual
Professional fulfillment, purpose, meaning, personal well-being, and professional identity.
Relational
Mentorship, psychological safety, teamwork, belonging, collaboration, and supportive professional relationships.
Organizational
Leadership, culture, workload, communication, recognition, and organizational structures that support sustainable practice.
Systems
Healthcare policy, medical education, payment models, equity, and the broader environments in which physicians practice.
These domains are not independent. They continuously influence one another. Lasting physician flourishing occurs when individuals, relationships, organizations, and healthcare systems are aligned in support of physician well-being.

From Measurement to Meaningful Change
Assessment alone does not improve physician well-being.
The Sutton Center believes every assessment should lead to action.
For this reason, our work integrates measurement with evidence-informed interventions, leadership development, mentorship, organizational consultation, and continuous quality improvement. We partner with healthcare organizations to identify strengths, understand opportunities for growth, and develop practical strategies that promote physician flourishing over time.
A Commitment to Evidence
The Sutton Center is committed to advancing physician flourishing through rigorous scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-informed practice.
Our work is grounded in research from medicine, psychology, social work, organizational science, and implementation science. We believe that meaningful innovation requires both scientific rigor and practical application.
Looking Forward
We envision a healthcare system in which physician flourishing is recognized as an essential indicator of organizational excellence.
When physicians flourish, they are better equipped to provide compassionate, high-quality care, mentor the next generation of clinicians, lead healthcare innovation, and strengthen the communities they serve.
Our goal is not simply to understand physician flourishing.
Our goal is to help create it.

Confidentiality and Integrity
We are committed to protecting the confidentiality of participants and the integrity of the assessment process. Individual responses remain confidential, and organizational findings are presented in ways that support learning, improvement, and trust.
A Long-Term Perspective
Physician flourishing is not achieved through a single workshop or one-time assessment. It is cultivated over time through intentional leadership, supportive relationships, continuous learning, and organizational commitment. We are committed to helping organizations build sustainable cultures where physicians can thrive throughout their careers.
Our Commitment
The Sutton Center for Physician Flourishing is committed to advancing healthcare environments where physicians experience purpose, connection, professional growth, and meaningful support. We measure success not only by improved assessment scores, but by stronger relationships, healthier organizations, and better care for the communities those organizations serve.
